The heads of the foreign affairs and European affairs committees of Visegrád Group (V4) parliaments signed a joint agreement expressing their positions on the European Union's next seven-year framework budget, security policy, EU enlargement plans, and opportunities for expanding cooperation, the chair of Hungarian parliament's European affairs committee, Ildikó Sopov said on Tuesday, MTI reports.
She added that the document signed on the final day of Hungary's V4 presidency shows a set of minimum conditions reflecting the member states' common interests, covering areas such as agricultural policy, cohesion policy and competitiveness.
Márton Hajdú, chair of parliament's foreign affairs committee, said participants discussed the protection of EU security and that the V4 countries agreed that "we must protect the European Union's external borders, which in most cases also constitute NATO's external borders."
He added that the parties also agreed that EU enlargement should be "fair", meaning that progress should be made based on each candidate country's merits, and that one candidate country should not have to wait for another.
The committee chair added that they consider it important for voters in all Visegrád countries to feel a greater sense of dedication to this cooperation, which is why they would like to increase opportunities for cultural, youth, and civil society engagement.
