French Institute Street Ball on the Bank of the Danube

July 8, 2026

African drum rhythms, French chansons, Moroccan world music, street performances, and culinary delights await visitors on July 11 at the French Institute’s traditional Utcabál [‘Street Party’]. Organized to celebrate France’s National Day, this free event will once again transform the Danube embankment into an all-night cultural festival, the Institute says in a statement.

For years, the French Institute in Budapest has celebrated France’s national holiday in a unique way: instead of official ceremonies, it fills the square in front of its building with music, dance, and community experiences. This year’s Street Party also highlights this diversity, where French culture meets the traditions of other Francophone countries.

Afternoon programs begin at 5:00 p.m. Thanks to the Tesz-Vesz Youth and Children’s Foundation in Szolnok, visitors can try their hand at traditional French and European board games, while Congolese drummer Acacia Mpofo and saxophonist Cărpaci Dacian Dumitru create a festive atmosphere with mini-concerts.

Acacia Mpofo will also lead interactive workshops open to all ages, where participants can not only familiarize themselves with percussion instruments but also embark on a unique cultural journey through the rhythms, dances, and musical traditions of Francophone Africa. The workshops, open to all ages, are built around the experience of making music together and the power of cultural encounters.

Marion Roch will open the evening concert program. The young French singer-songwriter is known for her emotionally charged performances that blend French chanson with folk and rock influences. Her songs are both personal and universal, and her concerts create a special sense of intimacy between her and her audience.

She will be followed by the Moroccan-Hungarian band Saïd Chalaban, which blends Gnawa, Sha’abi, and Hassani musical traditions with dub, funk, and psychedelic rock. Saïd Tichiti’s ensemble, which has been active in Hungary for over twenty years, has become a fixture on the local world music scene.

Bassmotion will close out the evening. The Budapest-based French DJ’s energetic set will get the crowd moving, transforming the Utcabál into a true open-air dance floor until late into the night.

The musical program will be accompanied by culinary offerings: visitors can sample Raclette by Lili’s melted cheese sandwiches, Bambino Pizza’s specialty pizzas, and Petit Koncept’s selection of drinks and ice cream. At the L’Occitane booth, guests can enjoy hand massages and a raffle.

Admission to the event is free.
