Matild Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Budapest has become one of the Hungarian capital’s most iconic luxury hotels. This June, the hotel’s offerings were enriched by adding one of the most ancient and prestigious Milanese Maisons, the Cova patisserie and ristorante, creating a meeting point of café cultures and providing guests with enhanced experience.

As to what hosting an internationally prestigious brand like Cova means for Matild Palace from a positioning perspective, the hotel’s General Manager, Serkan Hüsünbeyi tells Diplomacy&Trade that today, Matild Palace is positioned among Budapest’s leading luxury hotels. “However, success in luxury hospitality is not simply about reaching a certain level – it is about continuously evolving and offering guests new experiences. In this regard, welcoming a heritage brand with an international reputation such as Cova Milano is extremely valuable for us. Cova is globally recognized for its rich history and unwavering commitment to quality. This partnership further strengthens Matild Palace’s position not only as a hotel but also as a destination where gastronomy, culture and lifestyle converge.”

Ideal choice
Cova has chosen Matild Palace as its first location in Hungary. Revealing the key factors behind this decision, Serkan Hüsünbeyi underlines that there is a very natural synergy between Matild Palace and Cova: both brands place great importance on heritage, craftsmanship and hospitality. “Matild Palace is a historically significant and architecturally remarkable landmark, while also embodying a contemporary vision of luxury. Budapest’s emergence in recent years as a thriving cultural and gastronomic destination also played an important role in this decision. When all these elements come together, Matild Palace becomes the ideal choice for Cova’s first address in Hungary.”

A meeting point of café cultures
Cova represents Milan’s café culture, pastry-making tradition and luxury lifestyle. The question is how much this heritage aligns with the Hungarian capital’s historic café culture. The General Manager has no doubt about it. “In fact, Budapest and Milan share many similarities in this respect. In both cities, café culture has long been an integral part of social and cultural life,” he says.
Founded in 1817, Cova has served as a gathering place for artists, writers and intellectuals throughout its history. Likewise, Budapest’s historic cafés have played a significant role in shaping the city’s intellectual and cultural landscape. The café heritage associated with Matild Palace is also part of this story. For this reason, Cova’s arrival feels less like the creation of an entirely new narrative and more like a natural continuation of an existing tradition. “We see it as a meaningful meeting point between two great European café cultures,” he adds.

Powerful story of authenticity
Matild Palace operates within a historic building while catering to an international luxury clientele, therefore offering an experience that feels both contemporary and authentic. According to Serkan Hüsünbeyi, for Matild Palace, authenticity begins with respecting the history and character of the building. “This hotel has such a powerful story, and we believe it is important for guests to feel that story throughout every stage of their experience.
At the same time, today’s luxury traveler expects comfort, personalized service and modern amenities. Our approach is to create an experience that honors the property’s historic character while meeting contemporary expectations. From design and service to gastronomy and events, we strive to maintain this balance in every detail.”

Experiences throughout the day
Cova’s offering includes Italian pastries, pralines, light lunches, afternoon tea and the aperitivo tradition. As for which time of day or guest profile he believes will generate the strongest interest in Budapest, the General Manager points out that one of Cova’s greatest strengths is its ability to offer different experiences throughout the day. “I believe the afternoon and early evening periods will be particularly popular. The afternoon tea concept aligns beautifully with Budapest’s established café culture, while aperitivo is increasingly becoming a favored social ritual in the city. I am confident that both local residents and international visitors will embrace these experiences.”

New dimension to the culinary landscape
Budapest’s gastronomy and luxury tourism scene has developed significantly in recent years and Serkan Hüsünbeyi is of the opinion that Cova’s arrival will further contribute to the city’s international reputation. “Budapest has made remarkable progress in both gastronomy and luxury tourism in recent years. The arrival of a renowned international brand such as Cova is an important milestone that supports this growth even more. It also demonstrates that Budapest has become an attractive destination for globally respected brands. I believe Cova will enhance the city’s international visibility while adding a new dimension to its culinary and lifestyle landscape.”

Common values at Cova and Matild Palace
Cova belongs to the portfolio of LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton), the world's leading luxury goods group. Regarding the expectations this may bring in terms of service standards, brand management and the overall guest experience, the General Manager highlights that working with a brand that is part of the LVMH portfolio naturally comes with very high expectations. Quality, consistency, attention to detail, and a strong brand identity are at the core of these standards. “These are also values that we embrace at Matild Palace. Our partnership with Cova further reinforces our commitment to continuously enhancing the guest experience and striving for excellence in every detail. Ultimately, our goal is to create memorable experiences that guests will want to relive and return to time and again.”
