The 180th anniversary of the launch of scheduled steam locomotive service in Hungary was celebrated at Budapest's Nyugati Station on Wednesday.
Wreaths were laid at a historical marker commemorating the event, regarded as the start of the Hungarian railways. The first scheduled steam-hauled railway train between Pest and Vác departed from the Nyugati railway station on July 15, 1846.
Delivering a speech during the wreath-laying ceremony, Transportation and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy highlighted the importance of the railways for Hungary's economy and said HUF several trillion of funding would soon be ploughed into upgrades of the rail network and fleet.
Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) CEO Zsolt Hegyi said one of the company's Vectron locomotives got a special livery to mark the anniversary and Magyar Posta would issue commemorative stamps for the occasion.
Fielding questions, Dávid Vitézy said new MÁV board members would be appointed soon. He also said lawmakers could approve a bill on the establishment of companies to organize public transport and to manage fleets on July 21.
