The Budapest heat record was broken on Friday with 39.4 degrees Celsius measured at the Újpest gauging station in the northern part of the capital, weather service HungaroMet said in a social media post.
The previous heat record in the capital for July 31 had been 37.4C, measured at the Törökvész and Gellérthegy stations in 1921.
HungaroMet added that while the national record was not broken, the existing one was equaled. In addition to the Újpest measurement, the Győr-Likócs station in NW Hungary also recorded 39.4C, matching the previous national record for this date, which was set in 1917 in Szerep in Eastern Hungary.
The current heat wave will last for at least a week, and during this time, we should be prepared for highs around 40 degrees Celsius, according HungaroMet.
Day by day, temperatures may rise to near or even above 40 degrees in the afternoon across an increasingly larger area. Predominantly sunny, dry weather is likely. Over the weekend and on Monday, there is a chance of light rain near the northern border. In the second half of next week, isolated thunderstorms are also possible in some areas.
Nighttime lows will remain above 20 degrees Celsius across an increasingly large area. In major cities, mountainous regions, and along the waterfront, lows are expected to be above 25 degrees Celsius. According to the latest forecast, the heat wave could last through August 8 or even 9.
