All four Hungarian competitors won medals at this year’s iGeo Geography Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey, according to the University of Pécs (PTE), which prepared the Hungarian team.
The announcement noted that 182 competitors from 48 countries tested their knowledge at the competition. From the Hungarian team, Máté Keresztesi-Kiss, a former student at the Fazekas Mihály Elementary and High School in Budapest, along with Samu Schlotter and Márk Kovách, who graduated from the school this year, won silver medals. Emma Napsugár Márkus, a former student at the ELTE Apáczai Csere János Training Grammar School and Boarding School, took home a bronze medal.
Máté Keresztesi-Kiss also performed exceptionally well overall, finishing in 17th place. It is a particularly significant achievement for the Hungarian team that all four competitors won medals. This has only happened twice before in the history of Hungary’s participation in the Olympiads, as emphasized in the press release.
They noted that Hungary has been participating in the iGeo Geography Olympiad—held since 2002—since 2006. Members of the Hungarian team have consistently performed well in previous years as well, winning at least two medals each time.
They also pointed out that the iGeo is a comprehensive competition consisting of written, field, and multimedia rounds. The tasks test geographical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the application of practical knowledge alike.
Held in even-numbered years, the competition is linked to the conference of the International Geographical Union, which took place in Istanbul this year. The next Olympiad, in 2027, will be hosted by Latvia.
