Hungary's national flag was raised in front of Parliament on Thursday morning in a military ceremony to mark the August 20 national holiday, attended by President András Baka, Prime Minister Péter Magyar and Speaker of Parliament Ágnes Forsthoffer.

The flag was hoisted by a ceremonial unit of the Hungarian Armed Forces to the national anthem, accompanied by the central military band and the national mounted ceremonial unit to honor August 20 as Hungary's official national day that honors King Stephen I, the country's first king and state founder, and the creation of the Hungarian state.

The ceremony was also attended by representatives of state and military organizations, members of the diplomatic corps and hundreds of onlookers.

The ceremonial swearing-in of new military officers took place as part of the event. Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that King Stephen knew that founding a country is not about a single decision, a single battle or a single law, and that building a country requires years, decades and centuries of persistent work.

He said it was the persistent work in both glorious days and ordinary weekdays that shaped a country into a homeland. "This requires institutions, laws, knowledge, allies and people who are willing to take responsibility for it," he added.
