Parliament elected political scientist Anna Unger as head of the National Asset Recovery and Protection Office (NVVH) in a secret ballot on Friday.

Anna Unger, an associate professor at Eötvös Lóránd University's Faculty of Social Sciences in Budapest, was elected with 137 votes in favor, seven votes against and one abstention.

Katalin Tasnády, a prosecutor from the Central Chief Prosecution Office of Investigation, was elected as investigative deputy head of the office with 139 votes in favor and six against, also in a secret ballot.

At the end of July, the Parliament’s Judicial Committee issued a call for applications for the positions of chair and four vice chairs; on Tuesday, it held public hearings with three of the candidates for the chair position and decided to nominate Anna Unger as chair of the office.

On Wednesday, the committee held closed-door hearings with the candidates for the positions of deputy chair for investigations and deputy chair for public finance. It nominated Katalin Tasnády, a prosecutor with the Central Investigative Prosecutor’s Office, as deputy chair for investigations, while the call for applications for the deputy chair position for public finance was declared unsuccessful following the hearings.

Few applications were received for the positions of deputy chair for prosecution and deputy chair for appeals, so those calls for applications had already been declared invalid. Both Anna Unger and Katalin Tasnády have been elected to serve six-year terms starting September 1.
