Traditional and culture diplomacy mutually support each other rather than competing, Foreign Minister Anita Orbán said at the annual Cultural Diplomatic Conference held in Budapest on Thursday.
The minister called for institutional cooperation to be shaped in this spirit. Since the formation of the government, negotiations have been under way between the ministries responsible for foreign affairs and culture to restructure the tasks, scope and institutional framework of Hungary’s cultural diplomacy, she said.
Anita Orbán emphasized openness to the cultural ministry’s demand for meaningful progress in cultural diplomacy. She added that the ministry will rely on cultural institutions in selecting their leaders and staff.
"The primary requirement for a cultural diplomat is cultivation. They must value and love culture for its own sake and view it as a heritage to be nurtured and enriched," the minister declared.
Anita Orbán said culture was a renewable resource, adding that the objective was to use culture to improve Hungary’s reputation. This requires diplomats who regard it as their duty to convey both traditions rooted in cultural identity and new cultural values, she added.
"After all, anyone who does not believe in the power of culture clearly cannot use it to influence people abroad either," she said. She added that the two relevant ministries will jointly develop the cultural diplomacy strategy, which will form part of Hungary's foreign policy strategy.
