Hungarian Press Photo Exhibition Opens at Capa Center

The 44th Hungarian Press Photo Exhibition, showcasing the best press photographs of last year, has opened at the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center in Budapest. The exhibition will remain open until November 8.

The show features the images that were awarded the Grand Prize of the National Association of Hungarian Journalists ('Nimród', a series by freelance photographer Diana Nemeh) and the André Kertész Grand Prize, the top three entries in each of the 16 categories, as well as special prize-winning photographs and dozens of other images on various themes.

At the opening, Orsolya Kőrösi, the center’s managing director, emphasized the growing importance of photojournalists' work. "A photojournalist not only takes pictures but is present, bears witness, selects and interprets, while personally guaranteeing that what they show is close to reality," she said.

She underlined that in the age of artificial intelligence, when it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between real and artificially generated content, the role of a space where authentic photojournalistic works — credited and backed by accountability — are presented, protected, and celebrated becomes particularly valuable. He emphasized that this is one of the most important missions of the Robert Capa Center for Contemporary Photography.

A total of 258 photojournalists submitted 2,355 entries, comprising 6,196 photographs, for the competition.
