Hungarian Parliament elected Dr. Péter Fejes Chief Public Prosecutor at Tuesday's session. The former Deputy Chief Prosecutor of Vas County, who retired in 2025, was elected in a secret ballot with 139 votes in favour and six against, effective November 4. Péter Fejes took the oath of office after his election.
Péter Fejes, a lawyer, university lecturer and a public-body member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), was nominated for the post on October 12 by the President of the Republic, András Baka.
President Baka said in the Parliament building after lawmakers elected Péter Fejes that the election of the Chief Public Prosecutor was an important step towards restoring the rule of law.
After the vote, the President stated that the election of the new chief prosecutor opened the way for the prosecution service to regain public confidence in its operation and for the institution's independence to be strengthened.
Péter Fejes, speaking after the head of state, spointed out that he did not wish to set out a program now, but that he considered it important, on behalf of the prosecution service, to immediately apologize to society for certain prosecution decisions of the recent period - and for their omission - that had "offended society's sense of justice" with justification and with good cause.
