The government has developed Hungary's National Water Retention Concept and Action Plan, defining the future tasks of Hungarian water management in some 600 pages, László Gajdos, the minister for the living environment, said at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest on Thursday.
László Gajdos presented the document at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) event entitled ‘Water in Hungary: Resources, Risks, Decisions’, and said that the document had been drawn up with the involvement of numerous excellent experts, and could become one of the defining professional reference works of Hungarian water management for the coming decades.
The strategy sets a long-term direction, creates the conditions for large-scale interventions, defines the projects that can be launched in the autumn, and sets the goal of restoring an independent professional institution similar to the former Water Resources Research Institute (VITUKI), the minister said.
MTA president Mihály Pósfai said in his welcome address, delivered as part of the Science and Parliament program series, that representatives of four ministries and three parliamentary committees were attending the event, and the great interest highlighted the gravity of the situation of water resources.
In his welcome address, Gábor Kecskeméti, the secretary-general of the MTA, drew attention to the effects of climate change in the Carpathian Basin, the consequences of water scarcity, and the strategic role of science and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
