Mixing plants operating in Hungary produced 3.956 million tons of livestock feed mix in 2021, 3.4% more than in 2020, according to a summary published on the website of the Hungarian Institute of Agricultural Economics (AKI).

The majority of all feed, almost two million tons, was poultry feed, with only turkey feed down on 2020. Of the remainder, 1.382 million tons was pig feed and 433,000 tons cattle feed. The former fell by 1.2% and the latter increased by the same amount year-on-year. Fish, game, horse, rabbit and other feeds accounted for 2.6% of the total, they said.

More than 60% of feeds contained cereals, 13.9% protein crops and their derivatives, and 8.6% oilseeds and their derivatives. The remainder consisted of dried cereal starch, by-products of the sugar, milling and brewing industries, by-products of maize processing, fats, oils, concentrated protein sources, minerals and feed supplements.

The majority of feed production is concentrated in the Great Plain, with Hajdú-Bihar leading the counties with a share of almost 14%.

The volume of exports was almost 290,000 tons in 2020 and almost 338,000 tons in 2021. Imports are significantly lower, increasing from 152,500 tons in 2020 to 181,700 tons in 2021. The main destinations for Hungarian fodder are Romania, Croatia and Slovakia, while imports are mostly from Austria, Ukraine and the Netherlands, the summary said.
