According to the latest data from the Road Traffic Register, more than 68,000 purely electric vehicles have already received green plates in Hungary. Compared to the beginning of the decade, this means that almost nine times more of the most environmentally friendly vehicles are on Hungarian roads, the Ministry of Energy (EM) announced on its official Facebook page on Wednesday.
In the first eleven months of this year, the fleet of climate-friendly vehicles has grown by almost 20,000 units. The Ministry of Energy expects the number of pure electric cars to rise to 120,000 by 2026, they added.
The number of new green-plate vehicles registered in a month has already surpassed the unprecedented 2,000 mark three times in 2024. The all-time record is held by March (2,108), with the same number of units (2,072) with light green official plates going into service in June and September. Last month's increase is no cause for complaint either, with 1917 more vehicles with electric-only propulsion on the roads compared to October.
The ministry reminded that the government is promoting electromobility with a total of nearly HUF 60 billion in two programs. Businesses can apply for non-refundable subsidies of HUF 30 billion for the purchase of pure electric cars, vans and minibuses. Almost two thirds of the available funds have already been awarded in contracts. As of Tuesday, more than a thousand applicants had been paid out, with one in four applicants receiving a total of HUF 4.6 billion so far.
As is known, a further HUF 28 billion will be used to tackle the white spots in the rural charging network. Six out of ten vehicles with green plates were registered outside the capital. The program will allow the creation of more than 100 new charging stations in the coming years. This will make the use of electric cars more convenient and attractive even in areas that have not been served so far.
The mass emergence of green cars has also contributed to the fact that emissions from transport, one of the biggest polluters, fell by 7% last year in Hungary after a steady increase in previous years, the Energy Ministry said.
