So far, more than 3,400 companies have requested funds for the purchase of green vehicles, the requests received so far together cover more than half of the total amount of HUF 30 billion, around HUF 16 billion, the Ministry of Energy (EM) reported.
The largest proportion of subsidies were requested for passenger cars, this category accounts for three quarters of requests. In the case of more than 2,500 tenders, decisions on support were made in the amount of HUF 11 billion and payments are ongoing.
Since the beginning of February, businesses have been able to apply for a non-refundable subsidy for the purchase of an electric car, truck or minibus from the REPowerEU framework. The HUF 30 billion program can cover up to HUF 4 million of the costs of purchasing a vehicle, depending on the battery capacity.
The program contributed to the fact that in the first half of 2024, the domestic green fleet expanded in the third largest proportion in Europe. According to the report of the professional representative organization of European car manufacturers (ACEA), in June 2024, 123.8% more environmentally friendly passenger cars were put on the market in Hungary compared to a year earlier. This is the third highest value after Croatia's 161.4% and the Czech Republic's 140.8%, much more favorable than the EU average indicating a decrease of 1%.
Based on the records of the Ministry of the Interior, every month since February, more clean and quiet cars with green license plates have been put on the market in Hungary than at any time before.
The greening of road transport, one of the biggest polluters, is not only an important goal in terms of climate protection, cleaner air and livability of settlements. The related industrial developments help restart economic growth and strengthen European competitiveness.
