900-MHz band to be auctioned off

March 29, 2011

The National Development Ministry plans to auction the 900-megahertz band and the winning telecommunications operators are expected to have access to the frequencies in the third quarter in Hungary.

Regarding the sale of frequencies hitherto not allocated, it is of key importance that the UMTS technology, compatible with the GSM technology, is introduced in the Hungarian market so as not to lose any of the previous results and competition in the market is safeguarded. These frequencies allow the further spread of mobile broadband services.

The Ministry that believes that the frequencies are part of the national wealth and should be utilized, is to initiate the legislative process within days and plans to close it by the end of first half of 2011.

The government’s main aim is to see increased competition on the mobile market, prices of services decrease, while the available bandwidth and the choice of service are growing.
