BMW Postpones Hungary Plant Construction

"In light of the current situation, we will be delaying a number of projects, like the plant in Hungary. Other projects will be carefully reconsidered. Now, more than ever, our investments need to be targeted and based on sound judgement," Nicolas Peter, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG has announced.

A press release by the company says that during the current coronavirus pandemic, protecting employees and taking responsibility for society are the number one priority for the BMW Group. At the same time, it is important to safeguard the company’s liquidity and secure its long-term success. The sales result for the first quarter was overshadowed by the global impact of COVID-19 and the effects of the temporary closure of a large number of retail outlets.

András Salgó, Head of Communications at BMW Group Hungary, told the news site hvg.hu that work at the would be factory in Debrecen, E Hungary could be delayed for months: "the exact duration has not yet been determined, but we expect it to be several months."
