Korean-owned W-Scope Hungary Plant Ltd. celebrated the foundation stone-laying of its lithium-ion battery separator plant in Nyíregyháza, NE Hungary this Tuesday. The investment worth EUR 720 million is set to boost the competitiveness of the company in a quickly developing EV market. Up to 1,200 new jobs will be created as a result, with mass-scale production scheduled to start in 2025. The amount of contribution by Hungarian taxpayers to the project will be disclosed after consultation with the European Comission.
W-Scope Corporation deals with development, manufacturing and sale of separators – a major component of lithium-ion batteries. The corporate group has operations in South Korea, China, Japan and Hongkong.
W-Scope picked Hungary as the location for its first European plant as part of its global expansion. An 82 ha plot located in the Southern industrial park of Nyíregyháza will host a state-of-the-art battery separator plant with scheduled annual capacity of 1.2 billion square meters. A major contract has already been signed with Samsung SDI in Göd that will purchase the bulk of the product. SK Innovation and LG will also be among future customers.
The Korean company expects huge corporate benefits from the investment. Most of all, its competitiveness will get a boost as a result. The modern technology used has the potential to raise production efficiency up to three times compared to competition.
As Choi Won Kun, President of W-SCOPE Corporation pointed out, the U.S. and the EU consider lithium-ion batteries as an item of strategic economic importance and are working on building out a supply chain with the help of large-scale subsidies and related policies. W-Scope plans to do its best to contribute to growth as a global lithium-ion battery center beyond the EU through continuous investment, research, and production.
