Hungary launches national utility company next month

Hungary’s ruling Fidesz-KDNP caucus has authorised the government to launch the national utility service provider in March, said Fidesz caucus chief Antal Rogán on Thursday. The company will first offer natural gas and later electricity services, as well.

The national utility company will start its operation first with natural gas services on the basis of Fõgáz operations but in a way that it can offer its services all over the country, Rogán said.

He added they expect the national not-for-profit utility company to offer cheaper services and so it will be able to compete with other companies.

"So with this we will be able not only to maintain [...] but also continue the process of [government-mandated] utility tariff reductions," Rogán said.

He said the cabinet aims to extend national utility services to electricity in 2016 at the latest.
