Körber Hungária Gépgyártó Ltd. (Körber) has made improvements worth more than HUF 3.6 billion at its Pécs plant in 2024, the German-owned company, which manufactures production lines and components, told MTI on Thursday.
Körber, formerly Hauni, which used to mainly manufacture and supply parts for tobacco machinery, but now mainly serves the pharmaceutical industry and paper industry, has installed a solar power plant with a surface area of more than 11,000 square meters on the roof of its factory building, acquired high-tech metalworking machinery and switched to more efficient and environmentally friendly powder coating technology this year.
The improvements were justified by the technology sensitivity and constant need for innovation in custom machinery manufacturing, the statement said, adding that it was also a strategic goal to reduce the company's environmental footprint. During 2024, three major and nearly a dozen smaller projects were implemented at the plant to increase competitiveness and operate more sustainably.
Solar panels, heat pumps and more energy-efficient technologies have significantly reduced the site's gas consumption. The company's machining plant is cooled in the hot season and heated in the cold season by a heat pump cooling and heating system.
The company now generates between a third and a quarter of its annual energy needs from solar panels. The system of 4,570 panels could cover the electricity needs of approximately 500 average family homes. The development of a powder coating plant and a new simultaneous five-axis CNC machining center represents a technological leap forward, enabling the factory to machine complex components in a wider range of sizes.
