In ten years, Magyar Suzuki Plc. has produced one million units of the Vitara model. The 1,000,000th Vitara with a GLX sunroof was completed this Friday at the Esztergom factory, the company told MTI.
The Vitara is currently Hungary's most popular passenger car, the company's communications manager Zsuzsanna Bonnár-Csonka said.
She recalled that the start of series production of the fourth generation Vitara in 2015 was a turning point in the life of Magyar Suzuki. It was the first passenger car the prototype of which was developed with the involvement of Hungarian engineers. Hungarian technicians were given a great deal of freedom to start production, which included the installation of robots in the welding shop and the painting shop, the spokesperson said.
Magyar Suzuki Plc. started production in October 1992 and has been the Japanese carmaker's only production unit in Europe ever since. Since its foundation, the owner has invested EUR 2 billion. The four millionth car left the plant last year. Currently, the Vitara and the new S-CROSS models are produced here, and in 2023, 88.5% of the more than 160,000 vehicles produced here were hybrid-powered. Magyar Suzuki Plc. sells its vehicles in 123 countries on five continents.
The statement points out that Magyar Suzuki has accumulated a high level of competence and knowledge over the past decades, especially in engineering, logistics and IT, and now provides a number of group-wide services to Europe. Thanks to its partners, suppliers and a national dealer network of 78 dealers, the company contributes to the livelihoods of approximately 10,000 employees.
In addition to manufacturing vehicles for the domestic and international markets, the company also sells imported Suzuki cars, motorcycles and boat engines.
The company is the 12th largest company in the country in terms of turnover in 2023. According to publicly available company data, Magyar Suzuki Plc.'s turnover in 2023 was EUR 2.871 billion, up from EUR 2.144 billion a year earlier. The company closed 2023 with a profit of HUF 141.708 million, compared to a profit after tax of EUR 22.658 million in 2022.
The Suzuki brand achieved a market share of 12.94% in the new car market last year, ranking first among all brands. The two models produced in Esztergom, the Vitara and the S-CROSS, sold 6,883 and 6,607 units respectively in Hungary in 2024.
