Wellis Hungary Lays Off 300 Employees

Wellis Hungary Co. Ltd. is to cut part of its massage pool production at its plant in Dabas, southeast of Budapest, and will therefore shed 300 of its 950 employees, the business daily Világgazdaság reports.

As part of the reorganization, a new development and service center will be established in Dabas with the expansion of the development department, and the production of the swim spa product line, which requires higher expertise, will continue in Dabas. The company says it will do its utmost to help the workers concerned by setting up a care program for them.

In recent years, Wellis has become Europe's leading manufacturer of massage pools and entered the U.S. market, but growth has been set back by war, the energy crisis and economic difficulties. According to Világgazdaság, demand has now fallen by about half and the company is adjusting its business plan, restructuring and downsizing.
