On the occasion of World Human Rights Day, the Budapest Bike Maffia organized a large-scale food distribution campaign in cooperation with the Embassy of the Netherlands in Hungary and the local Flemish representation.
The Budapest Bike Mafia provided food and vitamins to people in need. On World Human Rights Day, they are raising awareness that everyone has the right to adequate food. The NGO says that more people are asking for help than last year.
Volunteers prepared two thousand meals for the needy on Saturday alone, and the program will continue in the coming days. The association's leader, Zoltán Havasi said that the economic crisis has meant that people who were previously self-sufficient now need their help.
"Those who have had very, very little will find it even harder now. If I look at the number of homeless people living on the streets, there is not much significant difference there, and not necessarily in social care institutions yet. However, we are also seeing more and more elderly people living in flats, couples, coming to us for help," he said
At the Hungarian Interchurch Aid, they are also experiencing that more people need help this year. They distributed gift packages to the homeless and others in need.
