Lajos Tihanyi's painting 'Akt studium' (Nude study) was sold as the most expensive classic work at Hungarian art auctions in 2021.
The hammer price for the Tihanyi work was HUF 95 million at the winter auction of the Judit Virág Gallery. On the back of the work, which has been hidden for a hundred years, there is also a previously unknown, never-reproduced portrait of a woman. The painting was purchased a century ago directly from the painter by Sir Alexander Korda, a legendary filmmaker of the era, and the work of art has been owned by the family ever since.
As regards contemporary works last year, the most money, HUF 44 million, was paid at an auction in this country for Judit Reigl's painting ‘Gomolygás, csavaros, oszlop, fém’ (Rolling, Twisting, Column, Metallic) – also at a Judit Virág Gallery auction.
