The Grand Prize of the 41st Hungarian Press Photo Contest offered by the National Association of Hungarian Journalists (MÚOSZ) was awarded to István Huszti, a photojournalist of the news site for his photo reportage in Ukraine entitled "Szilánkok" (Fragments); and Bálint Szajki, photojournalist of 24.hu, was awarded the André Kertész Grand Prize for his photo reportage entitled "Health and Illness."
At the press conference held on Wednesday at the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center, András Bánkuti, President of the Photojournalism Section of MÚOSZ and curator of the exhibition, said that this year's Hungarian Press Photography Exhibition focuses on the war in Ukraine, showing the fighting and the lives of war refugees in the neighboring country.
Also featured in this year's exhibition are photographs of Hungarian cultural life, including portraits of artists, theater and popular music festivals. Photo reports on environmental protection, including the pollution of the Sajó river and last year's extreme drought, are also prominently featured in the exhibition," András Bánkuti added.
In addition to the award-winning works, the exhibition will also showcase other high-quality entries, the curator added.
This year, 269 photographers entered the 41st Hungarian Press Photo Contest with 2,443 entries, including 1,881 individual images and 562 series, bringing the total number of photos submitted to 6,810, up by 1,000 from last year. The jury this year consisted of Tamás Szlukovényi, Stephane Arnaud, Adrian Evans, Daniela Mrazkova and Ákos Stiller.
The exhibition at the Robert Capa Center for Contemporary Photography is on display until May 28.
