The Hungarian version of Wikipedia, the best-known free encyclopedia, has reached half a million entries this week after 19 years of work and nearly 25 million edits.
The crossing of this milestone (with an article about diplomat Károly Szarka) was announced by the Wikimedia Hungary Association in a statement sent to the state news agency MTI.
With 500,000 entries, the Hungarian version is the twenty-sixth largest Hungarian lexicon among the Wikipedias (by comparison among the largest Hungarian encyclopedias: Révai's Great Lexicon contains 230,000 entries, while the Great Lexicon of Pallas and the Hungarian Great Lexicon contain 150,000 entries).
According to the information provided, the Hungarian version of Wikipedia is regularly visited from around 10 million devices and hundreds of millions of entries are viewed every month. About 5,000 occasional or regular editors are involved in expanding and improving the Hungarian edition every month.
Wikipedia articles can be added by anyone by clicking on the "edit" button on each page. Articles must be written from a neutral point of view and based on reliable sources. The most active editors constantly check for changes, and problematic ones are usually withdrawn within minutes.
Wikipedia is a free-to-use online encyclopedia that was launched in English in 2001 and in Hungarian in 2003, and has become one of the most popular sources of information, with over half a billion visitors a month. With around 40 million entries in hundreds of different languages, the encyclopedia is edited by 70,000 volunteers in an open online community that anyone can join.
The servers hosting the website are run by a non-profit organization in California, the Wikimedia Foundation, and funded by donations from readers. In Hungary, the editors are supported by the Wikimedia Hungary Association.
According to the announcement, the Hungarian Wikipedia also has a practice of highlighting the best-ranked articles. Currently, more than a thousand articles have successfully passed this procedure and have been awarded the status of featured article. These quality articles are also featured on the main page to offer a taste of the quality of the articles.
