As part of the Jewish Summer Festival, Budapest’s Central (Szabó Ervin) Library hosted two spectacular exhibitions, on Israel’s finest children’s book illustrations, and on famous Jewish manuscripts and ceremonial objects.
The opening of the exhibitions was attended by the Israeli Ambassador to Hungary Ilan Mor and Mayor of Budapest István Tarlós. In his speech, Ambassador Mor hoped that young and old alike would enjoy a glimpse of Israel’s past – both recent and more distant.
Mayor Tarlós said that Jewish culture is an essential part of Hungarian culture, and referred to some of the many outstanding Jewish Hungarians, such as Miklós Radnóti, Antal Szerb, Frigyes Karinthy, István Örkény and Dénes Gábor. The exhibition is open until 13 September.
