To develop the relations between Latin America and Hungary, the Latin American Union, named LATIMO, was founded on Nov 28, 2011 by former diplomats, business people from the travel industry, commercial and economic experts and technical specialists, who have been committed to developing the bilateral relations between Hungary and South America for decades.
LATIMO is a non-profit organization, and is a separate legal entity, which does not engage in direct political activities, but it supplements the Hungarian government’s policy towards Latin America with its own resources. The organization aims to strengthen and cultivate the economic and friendly relations between Hungary and Latin America, and it also endorses the cause of improving intercultural dialogue and understanding between Hungarian and Latin American people: it also supports the cause of environment protection and sustainable development.
The attendees of the association elected Sándor Balogh to act as president of the organization. Founding members include public figures, businessmen, former diplomats and practitioners, the media, and those who are interested in the region for personal reasons alike. The association has an open view of politics, sexuality, religion, or ideology: Hungarians and citizens of other countries and anyone who embraces the organization’s objectives and participates in its activities can become a member.
