77-year-old Pulitzer Memorial Prize-winning photographer, Tamás Révész co-authored a book with his teenage grandson living in New Jersey.
Moreover, it recounts the first year of a poodle puppy's life, told from the perspective of the dog, narrated by the grandson, Joel Révész, and illustrated through the photographs of Tamás Révész, a photojournalist recognized with the World Press Photo and Balázs Béla awards.
Tamás Révész returned to Hungary after 20 years of living in America, and his latest book was made in Budapest. The highly awarded and renowned photographer is known from Rome to New York, from Rio to Budapest in the photography world. He has had sixty solo exhibitions worldwide and is the author of eleven books, including "Farewell to the Gypsy Camp," and albums about Budapest, New York, Rome, and Sicily. His photo reports appeared from the '90s to the 2000s in prominent publications such as the French Liberation, the International Herald Tribune, International Wildlife Magazine, Newsweek, and the British Guardian. As a curator, he was the first to bring the exhibition of the Capa brothers (Robert and Cornell) to Europe and has been organizing the World Press Photo exhibition for over three decades.
When Révész starts a project, he strives to do the most thorough work possible. This was also the case when he created the picture book "Ziza, the First Year of a Poodle Puppy" with his twelve-year-old grandson, Joel Révész, who lives in the United States. The bilingual captions in English and Hungarian tell the story from the pet's perspective, detailing how the lovable dog finds a home and family in Budapest and discovers the world. The book is illustrated with unique photographs by Tamás Révész.
After their children leave home, many people choose a new, four-legged family member, who keeps them fresh and healthy. This was also the case with Tamás Révész, who chose a poodle not only because it is the seventh most popular breed worldwide, but because these dogs are smart, gentle, loyal, empathetic, wonderful family members, and excellent therapy dogs.
For the book's creation, it was essential for Tamás to document Ziza's first year with photographs, and for Joel - who, despite his young age, has been writing in various genres for several years and is also a stand-up comedian - to empathize with the puppy's situation and turn it into a wise and heartwarming story.
The 88-page hardcover book, illustrated with colorful photographs, will be published through a crowdfunding model. Tamás Révész and his team launched a campaign on Hungary's largest crowdfunding marketplace, Brancskozosseg.hu, to raise the necessary funds for the publication. Link to campaign.
Crowdfunding is not about donations but a pre-financed purchase. The buyer pre-orders the book, essentially financing its production costs, and if the target amount is reached, they receive the product. If not, the money is refunded, making the purchase completely risk-free for the buyer.
"Ziza, the First Year of a Poodle Puppy" is not just a touching story for children and dog lovers, but also an attractive photo album for quality photography enthusiasts.
