Accusations by Hungarian National Bank (NBH) governor György Matolcsy to blame a "major NATO ally" trying to topple the Hungarian government and the central bank in 2014 lacked credibility, the spokesman for the US Embassy in Budapest said.

The press attaché for the U.S. Embassy in Budapest Richard Damstra was quoted by the daily Népszava as saying after Mr. Matolcsy talked about this in speech in Hungarian Parliament. The NHH governor did not name the country but many suspected he referred to the United States.

The Reuters news agency repeatedly asked the National Bank for comment but received no reply. The opposition Socialist Party has called for an investigative committee to be set up to establish the facts as they think these serious accusations deserved scrutiny.
