Less children were born in Hungary in the first half of 2010 than a year before but the number of deaths was also lower. Statisticians calculate that immigration helped the Hungarian population to be slightly over 10 million.
According to preliminary data released by the Central Statistical Office of Hungary, 45,128 children were born in Hungary in the first half of 2010, 4.3% less a year before. The number of deaths was 64,683, which constitutes a 3.2% fall compared to January-June 2009. The natural decrease is 19,555 people, almost the same number as a year before. Taking into consideration international migration, the number of people living in this country fell by around 10,000 and the estimated population of Hungary at the end of June this year was 10 million and four thousand people.
The number of marriages continues to fall. The 14,423 marriages held in January-June this year was 12.9% less than in the same period of 2009. This decrease, just like that of the population, is more characteristic in the eastern regions of the country.
