The United States Ambassador to Hungary, Eleni Tsakopoulos Kounalakis, accompanied by some Embassy staff, was among the four and a half thousand participants who swam across Lake Balaton this past week-end.
The American ambassador was one of the 4,501 swimmers who swam 5.2 kilometers across Lake Balaton from Révfülöp on the northern shore to Balatonboglár on the south. She completed the distance in 2 hours and 28 minutes.
She noted the water was a bit cold (22 degrees C / 72 F) but the 'Swimming Fortress' team, organized by the Hungarian Defense Ministry and joined by the US Embassy team including - among others - the Ambassador and Consul General Jeffrey Lodinsky successfully undertook what they had been training and waiting for.
In behalf of the Hungarian Defense Ministry, it was state secretary Lajos Fodor - a former chief of staff of the Hungarian Army - who welcomed the American guests and also joined them for the Balaton Swim.
