This year, the Swiss Chamber of Commerce in Hungary (SwissCham) celebrates the 20th anniversary of its foundation. In the recent Swiss Focus of Diplomacy & Trade, the President of the organization talked about the past two decades and the years to come.
January 2011, when Diplomacy & Trade published its previous country focus on Switzerland, marked the start of a new phase in the life of the Swiss Chamber of Commerce in Hungary as the chief executive position was taken over by Júlia Lipovecz. As SwissCham President Dr. István Béres looks back at the consequent changes over these past four years, he points out to Diplomacy & Trade that “we have definitely reinforced contacts and communication with our members. We regularly publish newsletters and update our website, providing information on chamber life and Swiss business news, including information submitted by our members. While retaining traditional events like business lunches and our Christmas party, we have many more specialized programs like our legal forum and tax forum that focus on a given issue.”
Swiss Business Day
Organized by SwissCham, in conjunction with the Swiss Embassy, the 3rd Swiss Business Day was a great success this past September. “With our motto ‘innovation and creativity’ in mind, we provided Hungarian firms of Swiss roots, and/or tied to the Swiss economy, and Swiss companies the opportunity to present and promote their innovative products or their successful cooperation. More than 60 exhibitors, from all over the country, and many areas of the economy were present,” the President says.
He proudly explains that “the exhibit hall impressively showed how diverse the Swiss economy presence in Hungary is, and how extensive cooperation is between Swiss and Hungarian companies. Visitors could see the jointly developed medical diagnostic equipment by 77 Electronics and Roche, ABB’s robot, the logistics software jointly developed by Ad Novum and Holcim, a new office furniture set by Vitra, Nestlé’s Nescafé’s devices and countless other innovative creations. In addition, of course, the traditional products like Swiss chocolate, watches and knives were there, as well.”
Anniversaries
The Swiss Chamber of Commerce in Hungary celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Dr. István Béres has been the President throughout the second half of this period (and co-president before).
As a founding board member, he recalls that “two decades ago, we were among the pioneering chambers. At that time, creating a discussion forum for companies from a given country was enough. It was about ten years ago that competition among chambers began to increase and members also started to demand more, including more concrete services and support in issues that concerned several members. Nowadays, more and more members would like to use the Chamber for finding direct business contacts. Therefore, we have created an expert network from the members, themselves, who are at the disposal of other members when an inquiry is received.”
Celebration plans
“The 20th anniversary is a good opportunity to stop for a moment and reflect on the past two decades and we have every reason to celebrate. We would like to hold a gala ball in March this year. In May, our regular assembly meeting will be a more complex one than usual with the confirmed participation of the Swiss state secretary for economic affairs,” the President concludes.
