The establishment of a science and innovation park has begun at the University of Pécs (PTE) as part of a development project funded by the European Union with nearly HUF 4.5 billion, which will be completed this autumn, it was announced at a press conference in the Baranya County seat on Thursday.
As one of the flagships of the future 14 Hungarian science and innovation parks, Pécs will be "a place where higher education institutions, research capacity, economic operators and students will work hand in hand, stimulating each other,", Minister of State for Innovation and Higher Education at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, Balázs Hankó, said.
József Betlehem, Vice-Rector General, expressed his hope that the park will be a sustainable and viable program. He said it was a fast-approaching development, which also means that research teams will be able to start work on their new sites in a short time, as early as next year.
According to the PTE press release, the investment, funded by the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Program (Ginop), will be made by rebuilding and modernizing the university's former children's hospital and pulmonology unit, which has already been moved to another site.
The two buildings will provide a total of 2,600 square meters for seven research teams.
