MVM Green Generation Ltd., a member company of the MVM Group active in renewable energy production, will build a new solar power plant in Kecskemét by the end of the year with a total investment of nearly HUF 10 billion, it was announced in Kecskemét on Wednesday.
László Gál, CEO of MVM Green Generation Ltd., said that their aim is to produce electricity in a more carbon-neutral way and to ensure the country's energy independence.
Their member company can currently ensure green energy production with eight wind turbines, more than 160 solar power plants and two hydroelectric power plants in Tiszalök and Kisköre, he added.
Péter Bilinszky, business project director of MVM Green Generation Ltd., recalled that four power plants, each with a capacity of less than 0.5 megawatts, had previously been set up in Kecskemét. In the future, it is planned to build a power plant with a capacity of 20 megawatts in the framework of an energy community project.
The director said that the total planned cost of the current project, which started in June 2023, is HUF 9.748 billion, with HUF 4.025 billion in non-reimbursable funding from the European Union under the Operational Program for Environment and Energy Efficiency (KEHOP).
By the end of the year, the solar system will generate an average of 99 687 gigajoules of electricity per year, which will cover the annual electricity needs of more than 12,000 households, while reducing the country's carbon dioxide emissions by around 27,000 tons per year.
The power plant will include a switching station, eight transformers and more than 43,000 solar panels. The electricity they generate will be converted by 67 inverters. The plant has a planned lifetime of 25 years, so it is expected to be able to supply electricity until 2048.
