Three hundred and fifty events will take place between August 18 and 23, and on the main day, August 20, 12 flower-decorated floats will parade along the route of the 57th Debrecen Flower Carnival route, with the floats accompanied by 17 Hungarian art groups and nine international troupes, organizers announced at a press conference on Monday.
Debrecen mayor László Papp of recalled that the flower carnival was first organized in 1966, although looking back at its history, a charitable initiative first brought the flower festival to life in 1905, thus making it a celebration that has evolved into a tradition dating back more than a century, linked to the festivities marking the founding of the state.
He emphasized that the Flower Carnival is a symbol of Debrecen that certainly makes the city worthy of mention.
On August 20, 12 flower-covered floats will parade through the streets, accompanied by 17 Hungarian artistic groups and 9 international troupes; among the international performers will be artists from France, Mexico, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Serbia, Korea and China, and the international Batala troupe will also join the carnival.
On August 20, the series of festive events will traditionally begin at Kossuth Square with a ceremonial flag-raising, followed by a bread blessing at 8:00 a.m., after which the carnival parade will commence.
Hundreds of thousands of fresh flowers from Hungary and abroad were used to construct the floats, some of which are mounted on electric frames. The floats can be viewed during the day at Nagyerdei Stadium, and the nighttime parade will showcase the carnival procession in a whole new visual spectacle, as the buildings and squares of the city center come to life with light displays.
