The Hungarian subsidiary of US-based innovative drug developer AbbVie and the Hungarian National Institute of Oncology have signed a strategic cooperation agreement, the parties announced to MTI on Thursday.

According to the announcement, the long-term partnership agreement aims to support oncology research and improve domestic oncology care by expanding access to innovative therapies.

Cancer is placing an increasing burden on European healthcare systems. However, thanks to innovative therapies, there has been tremendous progress in the treatment of cancer, greatly improving patients' options and chances of recovery. With early detection, most cancers are now curable, the announcement says .

Karolina Argay, head of the Clinical Research Department, was quoted as saying that patient participation in clinical research can open up new opportunities for patients. The aim of the current agreement is to make participation in AbbVie's trials available to as many patients treated at the Oncology Institute as possible. They are working to ensure that one in ten patients treated here can also participate in clinical trials.

In addition, it is important that oncology patients have access to innovative new therapies as soon as possible. The new agreement therefore places particular emphasis on accelerating trials.

István Balla, head of AbbVie's clinical research department in Hungary, added that they are doing everything they can to shorten the preparatory phase of trials and to launch such trials more efficiently and quickly. This includes the mutual rapid execution of contracts and the finalization of research costs as soon as possible.

An important element of the agreement is that clinical trials should be launched in as many therapeutic areas as possible, including solid tumor indications in addition to the existing serious hematological-oncological profile. AbbVie is also committed to covering the full spectrum of clinical trials.
