The gap between the performance of Hungarian hotels and that of other types of accommodations is widening: hotel guest traffic remained stable nationwide during this year’s summer season, whereas private and other types of accommodations saw a significant decline – as noted by the Association of Hungarian Hotels and Restaurants (MSZÉSZ) in its latest analysis.
They added that the growing number of hotel guests did not correspond to an improvement in revenue indicators, so the aggregate tourism data alone do not provide an accurate picture of the sector’s situation.
In August, hotels continued to play a dominant role in the distribution of guest nights, along with private and other types of accommodations: the former accounted for 43% of the total, while the latter accounted for 36%.
Together, these two types of accommodations accounted for nearly four-fifths of domestic guest nights, meaning their performance significantly influences the trend in national tourism statistics, the analysis points out.
In the last month of summer, nearly 3 million guest nights were recorded in Hungarian hotels, which is on par with the previous year’s level.
In contrast, the number of guest nights across all types of tourist accommodations fell from 7.3 million to 6.9 million, a decrease of 5.8%.
The difference stems primarily from the performance of private and other types of accommodations, which saw a decline of nearly 12%.
