Lidl Magyarország has opened a new logistics base at a cost of close to HUF 60 billion in Kiskunfélegyháza (SE Hungary), the local unit of the German-owned discount chain said on Tuesday.
In a statement sent to MTI on Tuesday, the retail chain emphasized that the development has created more than 400 jobs in the region, bringing the number of the company’s employees in Hungary to 10,500. According to plans, the team at the new logistics center will be expanded by approximately 50 employees in the near future.
The facility, spanning more than 83,000 square meters, is the company’s largest warehouse in Hungary to date and will serve 70 stores in the future. The logistics center features 194 loading docks.
The 24,000-square-meter refrigerated section operates using an environmentally friendly refrigerant, and energy-efficient solutions play a key role in the building’s operations. A solar panel system covering approximately 9,000 square meters operates on the roof; waste heat generated in the cold storage facility is used for underfloor heating; and a 10,000-square-meter biodiverse green space has been created around the center.
Lidl Hungary opened its first logistics center and 12 stores in Hungary in 2004; today, the company operates 220 stores nationwide and sources nearly 60% of its products from Hungarian suppliers.
