1,002,200 people in Romania declared themselves as Hungarians in this year's census, making the Hungarian minority 6% of the population who answered the question, the Romanian National Institute of Statistics is quoted by the Hungarian state news agency MTI.
In the previous census, in 2011, 1,227,623 people declared themselves as Hungarians – a drop of more than 225,000 in ten years.
According to preliminary data, Romania's population has reached 19,053,800 (a decrease of 1.1 million compared to the previous census), of which 16,568,900 declared their nationality. Of these, 89.3%, or 14.8 million people, declared themselves as Romanian.
After Hungarians, the Roma minority is the most populous, numbering 569,500 and accounting for 3.4% of the population. The Ukrainian (45,800), German (22,900) and Turkish (20,900) nationalities also number over 20,000.
Hungarian is the mother tongue of 6.3 percent of the population. 91.6% use Romanian as the first language in the family. Romani is spoken by 1.2% and Ukrainian by 0.2%.
