A convoy of trucks loaded with food donations worth HUF one hundred million drew attention to World Food Day in Budapest on Friday. The 17th World Food Day action was organized by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Hungarian Food Bank Association.
A convoy of 20 trucks with more than 60,000 kilos of cargo passed through the center of Budapest. The donation was offered by food producers and distributors.
The aim of the initiative is to raise awareness among government, business, civil society and the general public about the food problems facing the majority of humanity. It will also provide tangible help to the most vulnerable, with food donations reaching tens of thousands of people in need.
"Today's global crises, pandemics, conflicts, climate change, inflation and international tensions are all having a major impact on food security. With more than 800 million people worldwide suffering from hunger and their number steeply rising, there is a greater need than ever for governments, businesses and NGOs to work together and for public awareness and support," the organizers said in a statement.
"Transforming our agri-food systems to make them more efficient is critical if we are to deliver on this year's World Food Day pledge to leave no one behind and ensure better production conditions, better food, a better environment and a better life for all," the statement quoted Vladimir Rahmanin, FAO Deputy Director-General and Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia, as saying.
As Antal Molnár, Executive Vice President of the Hungarian Food Bank Association pointed out, "this year, the Food Bank has already saved more than six million kilos of surplus, near-expiry or defective food from the commercial and manufacturing sector, so that they are not sent to the landfill but to people in need." He also said that everyone can do something for food safety in their own environment. For example, by making conscious choices to help eliminate food problems, buying local and seasonal ingredients and favoring products that require less packaging.
World Food Day is a 150-country coalition to raise awareness among decision-makers and the public about the hunger that is afflicting humanity and to encourage people to tackle food problems. This year's World Food Day motto, ‘Leaving no one behind’, also underlines that people can only lay the foundations for a more sustainable common future together.
This year's convoy delivered around 60 tons of non-perishable food, including canned goods, long-life milk, margarine, porridge, oat milk, pickled cucumbers, dry salami, pasta and soft drinks. The shipment, worth HUF 100 million, will eventually be delivered to the Food Bank's central warehouse in the District 17 of the capital, where it will be used to prepare more than 35,000 food packages for the needy.
