In the past day, 10,265 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus infection, bringing the total number of identified infections since the beginning of the outbreak to 976,432, according to coronavirus.gov.hu. 178 patients with coronavirus have died, bringing the total number of victims to 32,514, according to official figures.
A week ago, 8,434 new infections and 98 deaths were reported. The last time the daily number of deaths due to the new coronavirus infection was over 170 in Hungary was in March this year, that is before vaccination started in this country.
The current number of those classified as cured is 828,535, while the number of active infected has increased by 8,789 in one day to 115,383.
There are 5,852 patients hospitalized with the coronavirus, 52 more than a day earlier. 565 people are on ventilators, an increase of 20.
The Hungarian Medical Chamber says the growing number of patients is placing a huge burden on the ambulance service and the hospitals that receive them. They say that emergency departments cannot cope with the workload, so the authorities are "converting and opening more and more departments for COVID care, transferring ophthalmologists, urologists, surgeons and nurses from these departments. The intensive care units are becoming saturated, even though new units are being opened." … There are enough machines but the number staff is lower and lower. "They have fallen ill and died, burnt out and quit. And without enough specialist staff, there is no real intensive therapy."
