51, mostly elderly, chronic patients died last week (36 in the previous week), bringing the official total number of deaths in this country to 48,629. The number of recovered cases is slightly up (2,133,974) while the number of active infected has fallen to 8,597.

There are currently 727 patients with the new coronavirus infection in hospital in Hungary (28% fewer as in the previous week), 61 of whom are on ventilators (some 70% more than in the previous week), the government's Coronavirus Press Center said on Wednesday.

866 new infections were confirmed in the past week (over 80% fewer than in the previous week), bringing the total number of identified infections to 2,191,200 since the start of the outbreak.

The number of people vaccinated against the coronavirus in Hungary is 6,421,176, of whom 6,207,670 received their second, 3,904,179 their third and 418,600 their fourth vaccination.

According to the statement, the epidemic in Hungary is currently "at a moderate level," thanks in part to the high vaccination rate. It was stressed that unvaccinated people remain the most at risk and are therefore still encouraged to get vaccinated.
