188 Hungarian patients have died in the past 24 hours, bringing the total official number of deaths related to the new coronavirus infection in this country to 27,172.
By Wednesday morning, 1,692 new infections have been registered, bringing the total number of identified infections to 774,399 since the start of the outbreak.
The number of cured persons has decreased to 497,084 and the number of active infected persons to 250,143.
The amount of viral hereditary material in wastewater is decreasing everywhere. The epidemic appears to be on the wane, the head of the infectology department at the South Pest Central Hospital, Dr. János Szlávik said on Wednesday
Commenting on the remark that 50-60% of the population, including those who have been vaccinated and those who have contracted the disease, could now be protected, he said that was not enough to bring the numbers down.
"We need to vaccinate another one or two million people, maybe even three million, to have a very serious reduction in the epidemic and a serious reduction in the risk of the virus returning to Hungary," János Szlávik said.
