By Friday, the number of newly registered infections had jumped significantly: the new coronavirus had been detected in 10,759 people in a single day. The daily death toll is also a record.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic in Hungary about a year ago, there have never been so many new infections reported in 24 hours, the worst data so far being on March 12, when 9,444 people were reported to have contracted the virus. To date, a total of 549,839 people in Hungary have been infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, according to official data.
The number of fatalities also rose on Thursday higher than ever before: the disease caused by the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) claimed the lives of another 213 people. This means that the number of fatalities in the epidemic rose to 17,841 in Hungary. 10,264 patients with coronavirus are in need of hospital care, 1,174 of whom are on a ventilator.
PM Viktor Orbán said in his weekly radio appearance this Friday that the restrictive measures in force will certainly remain in place for another week from this coming Monday. These measures can only be relaxed step by step. He was of the view that this process could start once 2.5 million people have been vaccinated. Currently, this number in Hungary is around 1.5 million.
