Hungary’s national swimming coach László Kiss has been forced resigned under the circumstances that developed following the revelation that he was convicted for rape in 1961. He says he felt the necessity to leave his position in the interests of Hungarian sports.

Kiss, who was 21 then, was sentenced to three years in prison 55 years ago for taking part in the gang-rape of a young swimmer. Eventually, he served 20 months. He still denies it was rape.

Kiss also resigned from his post as deputy mayor of the town of Százhalombatta, just south of Budapest, where the local swimming pool bears his name.
