Mandatory Medical Chamber Membership for Doctors

Membership in the Hungarian Medical Chamber will again become mandatory for doctors, government spokeswoman Anita Köböl said on Thursday.

Addressing a government press briefing, she noted that in 2023, a political conflict had effectively paralyzed the chamber's operations under the previous government. She said the current government has now decided to restore the chamber’s powers.

She said that since the previous government "stripped away" the chamber's powers, there had been no representative forum where doctors could voice concerns or proposals about the sector, and the body had lost its right to review health-care-related legislation.

In the future, only members of the Hungarian Medical Chamber will be allowed to practice medicine, Anita Köböl said, adding that the reinstatement of mandatory membership will also apply to health-care workers with advanced vocational training.

She said the legislative amendment aimed to strengthen professional self-governance and further improve patient safety and professional standards. The government will submit the related bill for public consultation, she added.
