Pursuant to a government decision, the Institute and Museum of Military History will move back to Kapisztrán Square, next to the District 5 City Hall in Budapest.
Starting in 2023, the Ministry of Defense took over the museum’s space in the former Nádor Barracks. There had previously been a plan to move the collection to Dísz Square, into the reconstructed building of the Army High Command, but that plan came to nothing.
The current government has decided that the museum should return to its former location, so the collection will also be moved back from Székesfehérvár and the Bálna National Defense Center to the Castle District.
To mark the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence, a family day will be held on October 23 at the old-new venue.
On this day, the temporary exhibition “Fates on File – A Selection from the Collections of the Institute and Museum of Military History” will open; visitors can also look forward to demonstrations of military equipment, military reenactors, and working military radios from the era.
There will be educational lectures on the history of the revolution, as well as on the military equipment used by the armed forces and the insurgents. For children, the museum has prepared its usual educational programs, including a craft workshop and a stamp-collecting adventure, and, for the first time, there will also be archival education sessions.
