President Áder at the Rákoskeresztúr cemetery on November 4

National day of mourning

November 4, 2016

November 4, the day when the anti-Stalinist uprising and revolution was crushed in 1956 by Soviet troops, is a day of mourning in Hungary. The country's president, János Áder attended a ceremony in Budapest's 18th district, Rákoskeresztúr.

The president said that events in 1956 had “given new directions to history, shaking the foundations of the Soviet empire that up until then was believed to be indestructible”.

János Áder noted in the Rákoskeresztúr cemetery that the Hungarian example was followed in Czechoslovakia, then in Poland, and 1956 had eventually led to the collapse of the communist system.
