The national flag was raised in military salute on Wednesday morning in front of the Parliament on the March 15 national holiday.
In the presence of President of the Republic Katalin Novák and Speaker of the National Assembly László Kövér, the flag was raised to the sound of the National Anthem by the National Defense Forces in Kossuth Square. The event featured the participation of the Central Military Band and the Cavalry Regiment.
The ceremony was attended by several members of the government, representatives of state and military organizations and the diplomatic corps.
In the cool, windy weather, many families and tourists came to the square. Most of the spectators were wearing cockades.
Many celebrations are held throughout the country and across the border in Hungarian-populated areas to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1848-49 Revolution and War of Independence. In the afternoon, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will deliver his speech in the town of Kiskőrös. Families are invited to a day-long program in venues like the Buda Castle and the Museum Garden in Budapest.
